New Jersey’s statute of limitations — the legal time limits — for bringing criminal charges against an individual are based on the crime that was committed. Specifically, New Jersey’s statute of limitations is as follows:

Misdemeanors 

  • Misdemeanors such as a disorderly persons offense or a petty offense have a statute of limitations of one year

 Felonies 

  • Felonies such as bribery and official misconduct have a statute of limitations of seven years
