New Jersey’s Initiative on Preventing Drunk Driving Accidents
This year, New Jersey has allocated $795,340 in grants to 132 law enforcement agencies to enhance enforcement and conduct checkpoints throughout the holiday season. The initiative, led by the Division of Traffic Highway Safety, underscores the state’s commitment to creating safer roads during a time when impaired driving incidents tend to spike.
The “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign is in effect from the day before Thanksgiving through New Year’s Day. This strategic timeframe targets the period when incidents of impaired-driving accidents historically increase.
Alarming Statistics from Last Year
Last year’s sobering statistics serve as a stark reminder of the risks associated with impaired driving during the holidays. Between the day before Thanksgiving and New Year’s Eve, 69 lives were tragically lost in impaired-driving crashes. Law enforcement agencies conducted a total of 574 impaired driving arrests, highlighting the severity of the issue.
In addition to impaired driving arrests, the campaign yielded noteworthy results in enforcing other traffic regulations. Officers issued 1,664 seat belt tickets, 431 distracted driving tickets, and 2,898 speeding tickets. An additional 3,537 summonses were issued for various moving violations, emphasizing the comprehensive approach to ensuring road safety.
